My McAfee subscription expires tomorrow, and I need to know what would be the best antivirus for me (I hate McAfee and won't use it again).
Yesterday, I finally upgraded to Windows SP2, which says it has a firewall and antivirus. I also have Spybot and free Ad-Aware. Do I need anything more than this? (And does the Windows firewall work in Firefox?)
If I do need something, I'm not sure whether to go free or paid. My computer has been slowing down lately, so I may buy a new one before the year is up, which would waste a subscription. On the other hand, I'm an active web surfer, so I want my computer to be protected, and I've heard you get what you pay for with free antivirus.
I'm looking for protection from anything that could harm my comp- virus, spyware, malware, hackers, etc.
Someone please give me a suggestion, and explain why you would suggest it.

I use AVG 8 Pro it's really good you won't see that annoying update thing on the free version. and it has an antspyware.
Google it.You have to pay for it though

EDIT;
dont click the link that David P has posted here,, It is full of virus;
Contrary to what you believe, this antivirus protection is very good and its free,, it is called avira and has scheduled scanning and automaticly updates so you have to do nothing but let it run,
Yes windows firewall will protect your computer no matter what browser your using;
Avira Antivirus free (Recommended)

What you could do is trial a couple of the different paid anti-virus programs and see how they work with your computer. Stay away from Norton - it's horrible bloatware.
I use Eset's Smart Security Suite and haven't had any problems with it. It isn't a resource hog either which is A GOOD THING in my book. Kaspersky also comes highly recommended though I've never used it myself.
Vist this site for a good debate on the fee vs paid anti-virus argument. I promise you it's not spam or viruses.

I would recommend AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition if you do not want to spend money. It is efficient and doesn't slow your computer down noticeably. Also, it catches pretty much everything provided you download the updates every week/month or so. Only having spyware removers is not enough.
I would not recommend using Windows Firewall because it has a mind of its own and will often block applications from doing things. It is usable but I wouldn't use it. I recommend Comodo Firewall. Its free, effective and flexible.

Well, I do have McAfee, and I am pleased with McAfee, but I do have two Computer Scientists friends and they each dislike McAfee for different reasons. One friend believes that you get what you pay for and he pays for something so expensive and complicated that I would never use it. And my other friend prefers the free AVG and free Spybot search and destroy which protects against Spyware. If you coninue with McAfee, if you purchase a new computer you just call McAfee and tell them and they will send you a link and you then install McAfee into your new computer. If you want to try something new, Windows has a built in Firewall and a Windows Defender Scan and new feature but do not run Windows Firewall and McAfee Firewall at the same time! You have to decide which one you want to use! Good Luck!
