What antivirus, spyware, and firewall do I need? Which program is what?

November 11th, 2008 · 3 Comments

And do I need an anti-malware?

I have the following programs on my computer (it is running slow. I may have overdone it.) I don’t even know what they all do.

Norton (came with my computer)
AdAware
Avira AntiVir
AVG
ThreatFire
CCleaner
Glary Utilities
Smart Defrag
KeyScrambler
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6

I only want to use free stuff too. So what do I need and what should I uninstall?
I was thinking about uninstalling Norton (because it’s only free for a couple more months), and using Zone Alarm as my firewall.

Thanks for any help!!!

Having more than 1 anti-virus 2 aant-spyware and 1 firewall will render all anti-virus, spyware, and firewall programs useless

      I recommend

      Avira AntiVir
      Comodo Firewall Pro
      KeyScrambler(cool tool but barely works…)
      CCleaner
      Defraggler

      Now uninstall everything except those=)

Oh jeez… You should only have one AV, not four. OK, you can probably use one and Threatfire, maybe, but I wouldn’t.

Select your free AV from these (Avast is good):
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-compare-home-professional.html
      http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
      http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

Ad-Aware and Spybot are well past their best, use Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware (initiate scans manually):
      http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
      http://www.superantispyware.com

OnlineArmor is an excellent free firewall, way ahead of ZoneAlarm free:

CCleaner is very good. Ditch the rest.
