I'm asking this because I have a nice new laptop and compared to what many of what you guys know, I am very dumb with computers. So what are some good things to download to protect my computer? Should I download more than one software? What do you guys use?
And also, what programs protect me against what problems? Please give me a list or some links to where I can (safely) download some things to protect my computer, thank you.

I use all of these programs except instead of AVG i use NOD32 but that's not free. All of these programs are free and I recommend all of them to you.

Here is a list softwares so you can create your own security suite based on freewares, this not only will secure your computer but also boost its performance.
Anti virus: Just run one antivirus on your PC, both options are great but i recommend AVG.
Kapersky is one of the best but isn't free.

Comodo firewall+avira antivir+spyware terminator all of them are free and are excellent choices. I only add spywareblaster and advanced windowscare to that combo. you can download all of them at download.com.
No PC security product can possibly protect you from every new spyware and malware threat. Some of these new threats would be undetected by most of the popular security programs, including the ones we all use. Some antivirus will detect spywares but can't delete them so don't think they don't work is just that they are not designed to solve those issues. In general, Windows does not allow the deletion of files when they are in use. However, Safe Mode will only load a minimum amount of drivers and services to run Windows, giving removal a better chance. Scan again and attempt to delete while your computer is in safe mode. Be patient because this take some time to get it done and do it at list once per month.

.for on demand anti-spy i use a-squared 3.1 free.HUGEdatabase.for real time protection i use spy-ware terminator.very good.my anti-virus is avast home edition 4.8.i also use rogue remover on occasion.i run ccleaner to clean up garbage files. a good firewall and i set my windows security levels appropiately. my pc runs sweet.cnet is a good place for downloads
