I'll tell you what I use and have no problems.
Antivirus: NOD32. NOT free of charge, but it's simple and you can scan your computer whenever you like. For free, AVG Antivirus or McAfee are sometimes the top choices if you don't like NOD32.
Anti-spyware: WebSweeper. NOT free of charge, either, but the paid version is an absolute must for me. Other options include SpyBot, Ad-Aware.
Firewall: Comodo Firewall. Free, and it detects almost every threat on my computer.

McAfee is good - but Avast is free.

There Norton Internet Security which is quite good Software and easy to use as well. Then there’s Kaspersky Internet Security. You can try out of any of them.

I use AVG free as it runs in the background all the time and scan with Malwarebytes each day in case I get any virus that can slip through.

Off the shelf Norton Internet Security or Norton 360.
I now use Symantec Corporate (costs heaps but a one off payment for a company)
Any free stuff sucks and will cause problems sooner or later.
