what does “encrypt data to secure contents” really do in windows XP pro?

September 12th, 2008 · 4 Comments

“folder>properties>general>advanced>encrypt data to secure contents”

i used this to encrypt a folder containing some text files. i thought encryption will make you inaccessible to users unless you type in some sort of password, but when i did this it just made the folder name into green color and did nothing to the folder or the text files. i could read all the text files.

what the heck is the functionality of “encrypt date to secure contents?

i think the functionality of the encrypt data option is to secure the content from users other than you that means users who have a different login than the one you use try to read or open the contents of the encrypted data by logging into your computer with adifferent login other than the one you used to encrypt the data, if you think it is not worth that just go to control panel>users and turn guest account on and try this you as an administrator can turn off the guest account any time from your administrator account

You need to have encryption software.

That “encryp….” is a socket for that encryption software.

this is to put a password to a certain folder or file so nobody can access it other than you.

i think the data will not be accessible to external programs for manipulation just because the data ere encrypted… i don’t imagine any other purpose of encryption without a password
