I was halfway through with reformatting my pc when several pop ups appeared. Basically they all had the big red x with the message saying "The application dll c://windows/system32/nvcpl.dll is not a valid windows image. please…" What does this mean? Is this a virus? If so, how do I remove it and how is it possible for a virus to exist in my PC when it's supposed to be "clean" since I am currently reformatting it.

its nt a virus. probably your nvcpl.dll fiile is corrupted. seems like it is nvidia drivers file. if it is reinstalling your driver should fiix it. however reformmting and instaling a fresh OS will surely fix it.

There are two possibilities, either its a virus (trojan) or leftover programing from a program that you removed unsuccessfully. I would download a firewall scanning program if you don't have one already (comodo is my favorite because it works and it is free) have it scan system 32 and if it doesn't detect anything then it is harmless. If its not a virus that means its simply something a program put on your computer as it was being installed to help it run. When it was uninstalled, it stayed on your computer for various reasons. This means it wont do anything and there is no reason to remove it. If you feel you need to remove it, simply have comodo remove it and regardless if its a virus or not, it will be removed. You can get comodo here http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/. Good Luck!
