what free WiFi security software is there for windows?

I have a win XP and win Vista PC both of them with WiFi builtin. I have your standard security software (mcafee on one, kapersky on the other). While I know that this provides protection for virus' etc what about security for the wireless portion of it (ie. from laptop to access point)? I know that keys and encryption are the best however this is useless for connecting at public hotspots (like starbucks or an airport for example). How do I prevent snoopers/sniffers? with free software? Thanks
