What internet security products to use & where to get them from ?

April 18th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I had became suspicous of the anti virus software torrents I had downloaded from minova . I had been Using CA security suite and Ad aware but my system still bacame victim of an infection which has messed my computer up and will need to be restored to "out of the Box state" along with restoring the OS
The security software Kaspersky downloaded from Minova turned out to be an unofficial product according to the Kapersky forum . This makes me skeptical about using security software torrents
Even before when I was using legitamate (paid for) products such as Norton security , NTL Netguard my computer became victim of infections which allways led me having to restore the OS to "out of the box state "
For next time I wish to be able to install anti virus/mal/spy/adware which actually does it's job of keeping the computer clean and well , instead of empty promises .
Has anyone else used supposedly good security software and still got infection ? Which security poducts are safe ?

      Avira Anti-Vir for virus protection.
      http://www.free-av.com/

      Spybot for malware protection.
      http://www.safer-networking.org/

      Windows Firewall.

Thats all I use, and I haven't been infected with anything for years. They're free too.

As a matter of fact, Kaspersky is quite good at doing the job, I have been using it for 2 years. The new version 7.0 update hourly, that make it really up-to-date. I would also suggest you to install Spybot S&R at http://www.safer-networking.org/ , it is a freeware, it detect and destroy the spyware effectively. The most important thing is that you update the software frequently

So how did I get infected in the first place?

You usually get infected because your security settings are too low.

Here are a number of recommendations to help tighten them, which will hopefully make you a less likely victim:

Buy a Security Suite CD from the computer store.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
