I would say separate programs. I have Avast, Zone Alarm, and Windows Defender, and Spybot. My system runs really good.
One time I tried Norton, and it slowed my whole computer down. I had a hard time just opening programs. I had to wait like 5 mins. for it to open. I would not recommend it.

My opinion is that Norton is too cumbersom, and hoggy, and it conflicts with other programs.
Here is what you need below. Both of them
Get these two solutions that actually are RELIABLE !!!
AVAST and AD-AWARE.
These tools do an EXCELLENT job, and the “home’ versions are FEE to the public.
(The business versions you should purchase)
A.
Avast free Home Edition
Get it here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht…
And please do a “thorough” scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.
When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).
Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will “automatically” update itself, also for free.
You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.
Note: I KNOW of several people who have used AVG and Norton and have gotten a virus anyway.
Don’t go with Zone Alarm as it is hoggy and conflicting.
I’ve tried them all, and have had wonderful results with DEPENDABLE AVAST for the last 5 years.
The corporation I work for uses the Pro version, and has never has an incident. Avast is your answer.

1. Download, install and run this program weekly or more.

Actually, not Norton or Symantec Security. The reason is they are system hogs of memory. Also they demand payment in order to grant you even the most basic protection.
Well, this is mostly a matter of personal preference anyway. I prefer to keep my programs separated out in order to be able to get separate reports from each program. With different programs the designers approach and formula is different so they will find scan and find different things.
I use AVG for my internet security and virus scans. But for spyware I use both S&D and Lavasoft’s Adaware. If I need a firewall I go out there and set up Sonicwall (An EXCELLENT firewall/internet scanner)

I have tried many anti virus programs in the last 12 years, and do research and test, and also read Pc Magazine, ZD Net, and microsoft.com a great research tool. Good Luck, maybe this link will answer you question.

Norton and McAfee are tied for second worst. Zone Alarm is the worst; it gave me pop-ups to tell me it blocked a pop-up. It also asked for permission for everything to run. Kaspersky is the highest rated one in the publications I read (CPU, Maximum PC, etc.) I have TrendMicro (usually rated 2nd) on all three computers and my network and have no complaints. I also use avg free antispyware as a backup. Be sure to install avg last because many of the other programs will remove it when you install them.
