I use COMODO Professional Firewall (FREE).
It's very good, not annoying with alerts with tons of system processes accessing the internet and such.
It has settings you can set it to, but the default levels are perfect for the average user.

Default settings will do,then when a program wants access to the Internet you can "allow or deny" the same for trusted zones
