A very good, free AV available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:
http://www.free.grisoft.com
And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Both are free, as powerful as paid programs, such as Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.
Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.
Good Luck.

For paid Anti-virus go to http://www.eset.com and download the 30 day trial version of Nod 32 Anti-virus and if you like it then purchase it after the 30 days. For Anti-spyware go to http://www.superantispyware.com and download the Free version. For a Firewall go to http://www.filehippo.com and download Free Comodo pro

Kaspersky is very good, it is not a memory hog and i use vista myself and find Kaspersky very good. Don't buy anything yet though. Go to http://www.download.com and search for Kaspersky security centre or something and you can get it free for a bit first!!
