What is spyware?
Is it a good or bad thing?
Is it the reason my computer is slow?
If it is a bad thing, how do I get rid of it?

Spyware are what bad websites download into your computer without you knowing about it. you have to download a spyware removal program to get rid of it.

it is a computer virus and searches for certain types of programs like a spy and hides in there for a delayed activation to corrupt your data.

Spayware mean program that spy into your system, check out what are you usually doing. Some use information to help their advertising system work better based on your favorite subject, regular work for example. Some can get your personal information to some dirty hands.
Download freeware Spybot Search and Destroy or Adware to help you out.

You need spyware to scan your pc for cookies used to market advertised products to you. And virus’s. Try the following:
PCTools Free antivirus.
AVG antivirus
Superantispyware
Clamwin.
Install all and scan with each one in turn. Also scan with windows defender.
Any spyware or virus’s will be shown and you can delete them. This will speed up your pc if they are found.
You could also do a search for CHK files and delete them, theyre created when you scan disc for errors.
Also delete TEMP folder and Temporary Internet fILES.
These checks should be done on a regular baseis.
Depending on your system you can also go to;
My Computer/Right click C Drive/Click Disk Clean then delete any unnecesary files on your disk.

Whether it is good or not depends on your point of view. If you are someone who likes to gather statistics about people or steal passwords or use other peoples credit cards, then spyware is just the thing for you. For everyone else it is a blight!
To give a scale, the average user is probably affected more by spyware than by viruses. Also, the border between Adware, spyware, viruses, phising scams, and trojans is now so blurred that antivirus companies now just call it malware.
If you have to ask whether it is bad, that leads me to wonder if you bother with antivirus software. You will need to use your antivirus package to do a scan on your computer. Do a full scan, not a quick scan unless you are pressed for time. Oh, and if you find your antivirus package is turned off, keeps turning off, or parts of it mysteriously deactivate, that is a sure sign you have some sort of malware on your computer. Don’t even bother trying to find the culprit as chances are you wont, get another brand of antivirus software. Look for something which has VB100% and ICSA certifications.
Many reputable brands allow download of trial offerings and give you a month or so to use the product. Do that and then do a scan. If you use McAfee antivirus software you will need to download a program from their website to uninstall their software (you will need to use Google to find it for you).
