The best free antivirus in my opinion is Avast antivirus. It's very easy to use but highly effective and comes with lots of features that are usually available on paid antivirus softwares.
You can get it at http://www.avast.com
Cheers!

I would recommend avast! avast! has excellent detection rates 92% and is free. AVG on the other hand has poor detection rates 86%.

The three free AVs that come to mind are
1) Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
2) Avira - http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
3) AVG - http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe
I'd go with Avast personally and Avira's not to bad either; yet AVG is slipping in my opinion on it's detection rates and usability on free version.
Best of luck.

There aren't any good free anti virus software packages I would even consider. You get what you pay for and nearly all free AV packages don't have up to date definitions or most of the real important features you would need to really protect your system. Remember now days most damage isn't just viruses, it is malware and spyware and the free ones just don't really spend the money to provide adequate protection. . It is a better investment to pay for a good one rather than run the risk of getting an infection that causes you to have to spend several hundred dollars to have some computer tech shop re-format your hard drive for you. I would highly recommend Trend Micro's PC-cillin. We use it on our corporate network as well as all of our desktops and laptops. It is superior in terms of current virus definitions, up to date spam and malware features and is priced comparable to Norton or MacAfee. It's pretty much load and forget it which is what a good anti-virus software should do.
