New Mac user here.. Since I’m selling my HP Compaq laptop, I have to transfer all the videos I have in it to my new Mac Book. But Mac only has Quicktime as video player (compared to PC which has Windows Media player that can play pretty much everything). I have movie files that are .rm, .avi, .mpeg, .mpg and .wmv… and they all don’t play on my MacBook… Ugh.
What’s the most efficient and just ONE movie/media program I could use/download for my Mac to access these video files I just transferred from my PC? Also, I had Microsoft WORKS .wps files (not Words/Office) from my PC, and now I can’t open them in my Mac.
Help me get the best tools to open my files from my PC in my Mac. I’m a new Mac user… and I’m kind of regretting it. But oh well.

go to http://videolan.org and that will play the majority of movies or videos you download. Go to http://www.flip4mac.com to be able to play windows media files in your web browser. These instructions here may help you with your msworks issues http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=22335 and then you can download open office for your mac. http://openoffice.org

Your works files wouldn't open on any machine that didn't have Works, PC or Mac. Your best bet here is to open and resave your Works documents on the PC, into a file format that is compatible with anything else.
If you're stuck, you can try MacLink Plus Deluxe (commercial)

It could translate some older versions of Works. YMMV
For media player, VLC Media Player or Flip4Mac
A good site for searching Mac shareware is Versiontracker.com

(Budda — try opening a Works file on a Windows machine without Works. This isn't an Apple problem, this is an application problem with a MS Works program that creates proprietary files that cant be read by anything. Ditto with Windows Media Player, which Microsoft keeps cranking out new proprietarty changes to and does not keep their Mac version up to date)

You have a mac - in those adverts they are supposed to be amazing, no viruses etc. You posting is the exact reason why i am put off macs unless you a trendy DTP designer or something. I would go linux before mac.
Anyway back on topic I thought there were emulation programs you could add, cant you make it dual boot?
