What is the best security suite out there?

October 25th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I use Windows XP. I do not want a security suite that will hog all of my system’s resources (like norton or McCafe), but I want it to be thorough so that I don’t get spyware or viruses. Lastly, I’d prefer not to have to pay a subscription, though I would if it was the best program around.

It can be a single program (like norton) or a collection of programs (like spybot, comodo, and avg combined).

Please list the program(s) to make up the suite, what they do (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc), and their price. If you got your info from a blog post or review site, list the source.
BTW… I don't want to use Windows Live. Sorry.

      Try these:

      Avast 4.8 Home Edition free
      SUPERantispyware free
      Malwarebytes free
      ThreatFire free
      PC Tools firewall free

I've used this set-up for quite a while now with no problems and most importantly NO viruses. All of these are completely FREE and together use very little resources…

      Good Luck !!!

I like this website for suite reviews
      http://remove-malware.com/reviews/

If your looking for a free internet security setup I would recommend
Avira Antivir Free OR Avast! Home Edition
      http://www.free-av.com/
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
You may only have one antivirus and one firewall

You can have more than one antispyware though
      I would recommend these two
      Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Free Security Guide For XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit):

To protect you PC you will need two things, real-time antivirus software and a two way firewall (inbound and outbound), Avast and Comodo work well together on XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit) and are completely free.

      Avast Anti-Virus 4.8 Home Edition
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

      Comodo Pro (firewall)
      http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Comodo Pro comes top in independent leaktests
      http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php

Tip: Browse the net using a limited account rather then an administrative account, a limited account does not have the power to make system changes or install software therefore preventing a lot of malicious software from being installed in the first place.

Its highly recommend that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox 3, and download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is SuperantiSpyware.

      SuperantiSpyware:
      http://www.superantispyware.com/

      Firefox 3:
      http://www.mozilla.com

      WOT (web of trust) Add-On:
You should install the WOT add-on it is a free internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free. http://www.mywot.com/

Because free programs are never completely as secure as the programs you are paying for I always recommend not to install either AVG free or Avast free, but one of those 2 in combination with 2 other programs.
      AVG free
      http://free.avg.com/
      or
      Avast free
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht…

Then the 2 programs you should install togehter with one of the above.

Threatfire is an anti virus, that can be installed next to any other anti virus program on the same computer
      http://www.threatfire.com/

There is a lot of mal ware you have to protect your pc against.
This is a very good program, that completely runs in the background
      http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.ht…

When you do not have a good firewall yet, you could install this one
      http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

Installing these programs, will not use any extra RAM or CPU usage.

Your computer will be very well protected and it does cost you nothing
