I am installing for someone an XP system on a machine that already has Vista installed. I got the partition made with Vista's disk manager, but XP Setup disk says it cannot find a hard drive. So I want to look at the BIOS setup to see if this is a problem.
Now the problem is that Toshiba puts in a password. It doesn't make much sense to me, since if a thief has the laptop, he's going to find a workaround anyway.
Owner says he gave me all the documentation that came witht the Toshiba laptop, and I can't find it in any of the printed material (not much anyway).
Anyone have an idea what the password is?

BIOS/CMOS passwords are manually set so if you do NOT know your's you need to remove the main battery, AC power , and the CMOS watch battery for about 30 minutes. Then you can access the BIOS again.
BUT
The reason you can not see your hard drive during the XP installation is because your Laptop uses SATA drives and XP requires that you provide the Pre-installation drivers. When you start to boot from the XP cd, it says PRESS F6 TO INSTALL 3rd PART RAID, SCSI, Or OTHER DRIVERS or something to that effect.
Tap the F^ a few times and let the cd continue to work, It will ask you to provide the drivers when it's ready. You should first, goto the Toshibva site and download those drivers. They fit on a floppy. You will need to borrow or buy a USB Floppy drive which are REALLY cheap.

Toshiba does not have a preset BIOS password, they are always set by the user meaning at some point, some has set a password on it. In order to remove it, you have to take the CMOS battery out of the laptop for 10 seconds, (it's a flat silver, round battery). You'll most likely have to open the laptop up to do this (or there may be a screw flap on the bottom).
However if the password has been directly set onto the hard disk, then there is no way to reset this without knowing it. You will need to replace the drive.
