What is the difference between a Firewall, Windows Defender, and McAfee?

August 5th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I was given a used laptop that has Windows Defender on and someone said that is suffient. The Firewall is turned off on the laptop, should it be on with the Defender being on? Would appreciate any advise not too technical please. I presently do not have an internet connection and due to finances, would have to get the cheaper DialUp for a connection in the future. Thx.
I appreciate advice on what to get, but can someone explain if the above are the same thing…if not, what are their functions? I have McAfee on the computer, too but it's not updated. Do you need to turn on Firewall if W.Defender is running?????
The McAFEE SUBSCRIPTION THE PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE LAPTOP IS NOT CURRENT. DO I NEED IT WITH W.DEFENDER?

Windows Defender is a horrible anti-virus program. Download AVG - it’s free and works a lot better. It’s what all my computer-savvy friends use.

Fire Wall is A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both.

Window’s Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it’s detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.

well windows defender is a program for antispyware from Microsoft. its comes preinstall with windows vista. its actually not as bad as most people say. as far as McAfee that would be your antivirus and most likly that comes with a firewall, if not i recommend turning on your windows firewall. go to control panel>windows firewall and turn on.

what do u mean by McAfee not being updates, like u have an earlier version? which is okay as long as your subscription is current and you can still get McAfee definition updates.
