What is wrong with a computer that powers up but doesn't send a signal to the monitor?

July 12th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I push the power button and it lights up. The monitor receives no signal. When I push the power button it shuts down immediately with no hesitation. It did this a few weeks ago but suddenly came on and now it seems to be permanent. I have checked all wires and connections. Nothing is loose or disconnected. I keep think hard drive but then wouldn't the monitor still receive a signal?? So..I went to the video card but then why would that effect how quickly it powers down? ANY SUGGESTIONS?? Please..I gotta have this up and running!! If you can get it to work…I will choose you for best answer!!!

try starting the computer in safe mode with networking by tapping the F8 key while it is booting up….then download updated drivers for your video card…hope this helps…cheers

Turn off the power supply, discharge the motherboard by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. Open the case. Unplug and plug back the following:
      1) RAM
      2) Video Card (if not integrated)
      3) Harddrive(s)
Close the case, reconnect all cables and turn on the computer.

Without seeing your computer it is hard to say. But troubleshooting the boot process usually involves seeing and listening. Do you get the normal Beep when the keyboard lights go on? Is the computer going through a complete Boot? Your PC could have a blown video card, or another critical component could have failed preventing the boot. Do you get the DOS flashes to the screen, can you push F8 and go into a command prompt?
Do you have a DOS Boot Disk? Try that if it comes up in DOS you know it is your OS.
I hope this helps, but you are about to learn to troubleshoot a PC.
      Good Luck.

      Possible fixes:

      1. Resetting your monitor: some monitors don't turn off and on with the button in the front. You have to unplug it for a few seconds, then plug it back in.

      2. Graphics card: most likely, your graphics card died. you can try removing it, cleaning it, and putting it back in.
