I have a Buffalo router w/ DD-WRT firmware on it. I got a Buffalo PCI adapter for my desktop computer, and it works fine, so there is nothing wrong with the connection. My laptop, a Compaq Presario V2000, can connect to the wireless fine if I disable encryption. But the moment I turn any encryption on, the Buffalo client tries to connect and then gives me an error, usually "Can not find target." If I use the Windows wireless client, it just stalls on "Acquiring network address."
The wireless card in my laptop is a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. I have updated its driver, but to no avail.
Like I said, I'm using DD-WRT firmware, not Buffalo's firmware.
I've been using WPA AES encryption.

Is there a firmware update for the buffalo router ? If so I would suggest you connect to the router using an ethernet cable and do the firmware update via a wired connection.
Also what type of encryption are you using ?
