I once used Norton on Win98. I can’t remember how it was. When I got WinXP Pro, I used avast home. Then my computer got infected by a Trojan (Win32:Zlob-CVB). NOT avast’s fault as my disk where the AV was installed vibrated out. When I posted a question on how to remove it, I got all sorts of answers. I was surprised that the one who said get AVG !!FREE!! got the most votes! I hated it from the day I installed it. So, I had to format my PC (I had an uneasy feeling). Now I’ve reinstalled avast. In the question that I asked “How do I del. my trojan horse virus? avast can’t do it. I don wanna get norton. I want free stuff.”, one said that Symantec’s Norton Antivirus was the worst antivirus. Why? Is it because it’s slow? I’ve seen guys using Norton and their computer seems to be working fine.
I am asking a question on Norton, and someone is talking of another OS which is only meant for entertainment! We're in a BUSINESS world over here! Hardly anything can run on a Mac and that's why Macs don't get viruses that easily.
EPhantom: "When I say it digs itself deep into your computer, I mean it puts itself everywhere, even in your registry key data base."
So what if it adds itself into the registry? Don't all antivirus programs do that? I kinda miss using Norton but I love avast!
16k-zx81: its a matter of personal taste. pros and cons is all. norton is bloatware. Its also an effective security suite/av just depends what you are looking for. Statements like "worst" are made by people who dont know much about security products.

I agree!
TOP SECRET is SOOO Right!
But 1 thing. Every time I plug my thumb drive in my office computer, it copies a file called "ise32.exe" into it. Norton doesn't say anything about it, but when I plug it into my home computer, avast pops up and says "A Virus Was Found!" with that radioactive image. It states that it is coming from ("F:\Recycler\S1-983423-9840\ise32.exe"). Malware Type: Virus/Worm.
I normally delete it off. So, anyone having this file on your computer and having no problems?
DOES A VIRUS ACTUALLY INFECT ANOTHER TOTALLY INNOCENT FILE?
AVG Free is useless! Compare:-
AVG Free 8.0

Getting norton is like a virus on a disk itself.
Thats Why I Got A Mac. They Dont Need All That Firewall stuff .. they have inbuilt ones, And You Just Get A Software Update to keep it stronger. But Macs Dont Get Much viruses anyway.
But Norton Suck

Simply put, it costs money, it “digs itself deep in your computer”, and it makes your computer run slower.
When I say it digs itself deep into your computer, I mean it puts itself everywhere, even in your registry key data base.

Norton is great, I use it. I don’t know what everybody’s problem is with it.

When you was using Norton for your win98 most likely this was quite an old version, Norton over the years has greatly improved as its been in the sector for a long time now. I have used Norton before (3/4 years ago) and didnt find anything wrong with it, its good for people who have no experience with computers, firewalls and anti virus software it is designed with a simple interactive interface seems relatively good at picking up viruses and stopping internet attacks, only draw backs I found with Norton is it quite resouce hungry so if you don’t have a decent machine it might start to run slow, Norton can slow up your bootup time of PC as it can take long for all its components to load and also at times it can be difficult to uninstall it.
Kaspersky and Nod32 are really good internet security solutions, there very efficent and no way as bulky compared to sofware like norton, I would recommend you get one of them if your going to spend.
Sadly with free antivirus as it free you can’t really expect much from it. you could always download a trial version of norton from the website, they last normally 30 days and you could see if this is what you require.
You could try:

Norton is NOT a bad Antivirus program. Truth be told, I have used the Symantec Client (Their business version, all the protection, none of the consumer level eye candy and bloat) in the past just fine without any real incident. It does have a few drawbacks however. These are just from my experience:
1) The consumer versions (Under the name Norton Antivirus, not Symantec mind you) are bloated, and none of the stronger options (like heuristics) are enabled by default. That being said, if people configured the program properly, it should work just fine.
2) Scans take forever…. And ever.
3) Uninstalling can be a down right nightmare.
That being said, Norton is still a leader in the field. This is a double edged sword of course, since anyone attempting to write a virus/worm/malware will test it against Norton to begin with. So while they do update their definitions rather quickly to meet this threat, most people don’t update their definitions as often as they should, and thus are in a bit more danger by using Norton.
Now, everyone has their own recommendations as to which Free Antivirus is the best, and I’m sure everyone has their own reasons for them. It often comes down to AVG, Avast, and Avira. AVG is rather popular, but looking at it’s detection rates on AV Comparatives, it just doesn’t even come close to Avast or Avira. If everyone on Windows used just AVG however, the internet would be a much cleaner and happier place.
So now looking at Avast and Avira, both are great programs. I often hear that what “puts Avast over the top” is that it has an e-mail scanner. I don’t really think this is a valid point, as most people use web based e-mail nowadays. Also, Avira’s active scanner is good enough that it would be able to pick up anything you may run into e-mail wise.
So out of the two, I prefer Avira. It’s extremely light weight, has a tiny footprint (doesn’t use much memory), and has marginally higher detection rates than Avast. Yes, Avast only requires that you register the Free version so you can use their program, but they will continue to remind you that you could be more protected by buying their software. This is also true of Avira, but it can be easily turned off (You can find the instructions here: http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm )
If you’re going to be going down the completely free route, then I would also recommend the following programs:
Spybot, Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, and Malwarebyte’s AntiMalware.
Once again, this is just my opinion. And I guess it boils down to: I recommend Avira…. AVG/Avast/Avira on default settings are usually better than Norton Antivirus (Consumer version) on default settings).
