What opinions can give me of the "G DATA Antivirus 2008"?

April 19th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Hello it wanted to know if this antivirus in their version 2008, in the version of trial or evaluation, is brought up to date automatically all the times that said updatings happen themselves during the period of 30 days. Also it wanted to know if this GDATA ANTIVIRUS 2008 does not give you problems to install it and to uninstall it. Finally that opinions you can give me this Antivirus, If is Efficient to Detect and to Eliminate any type of Virus, Trojan, Worms, Adware, Malware, Spyware. If this Antivirus does NOT put you slow the computer upon Initiating the Windows XP, upon utilizing any program, upon opening and to close windows, to the normal navigation and use of Internet. It is true that this antivirus is incorporated to the options that brings the Msn Messenger, in the section of ("transfer of files") where says: ("To Examine the files in search of virus using") bony that the option gives you, already configured or inserted by the own G Data Antivirus upon being installed this Antivirus initially in your Pc.
Also they have said me that this G DATES Antivirus uses two Motors of I Scan or Analysis against the virus, one of the Bitdefender and the other one is the Kaspersky, both at the same time or in form combines. I ask me which will be the truth on the matter.

I do not recommend this program. I became familiar as a (former) AOL user. It is the anti-virus program provided in a limited form with AOL, at least in Europe. I was not dissatisfied with it then. I was pleased that it was constantly updated automatically. A few months ago I purchased “G Data InternetSecurity 2008″, with a triple license for my laptop and 2 PCs, a Pentium IV and a new Quad, both built by myself. On the most frequently-used PC I had constant problems. The program would not retain settings and was awkward to administer. I tried repeatedly to set various applications as trusted and was constantly experiencing blockages and internet disruption. G Data was constantly evaluating my router as a threat. If I used the internet-filter function I was usually unable to access sites with either Internet Explorer or Firefox. The list of annoyances is extensive. I experienced frequent connection disruption, and thought there was something wrong with the connection itself from the provider.

I tried to get support from G Data, but as far as I could tell, those people were not really interested in service. They didn’t really help at all. I finally uninstalled the program and installed one of the highly-rated free anti-virus programs. Almost all of my problems vanished. I still have a G Data problem, however. The uninstall was less than complete and I am ATTEMPTING to remove the remnants of the old installation and having a remarkably hard time doing so, both with registry maintenance programs and manually. Attempts to manually remove some registry entries were flatly refused by the system. The OS recognizes two (2) active anti-virus programs, one being G Data. This is apparently causing some difficulty, the extent of which I am still trying to determine.

To summarize, you’d be better off with AVAST or AntiVir.

I have used G-Data Antivirus 2008, there has been many improvements from their prior releases. I have never used the G Data Internet Security Suite. I prefer to use my own firewall which is Agnitum Outpost.

I have not had any issues with G-Data Antivirus. It works just fine on my computer. Pentium Dual Core 2.4ghz, 3 gigs ram. Granted, this antivirus slows your computer down a bit if you try to scan your computer using both scanning engines while trying to perform other tasks. Its best to allow G-Data scan while you are away in “screen saver” mode.

I had no problems with losing my settings like the other user had. I even uninstalled it once after my trial ran out. It uninstalled correctly, I believe there was an empty folder left behind in my Program Files, and a registry entry which contained mt settings. I know this because later I bought the program and installed it again and my original settings were intact.

Overall I am Happy with G-Data Antivirus. It offers superrior protection. The only thing I dislike is I think you can only purchase yearly subscriptions and not multiple years.

I can live with this program eating more resources, I use it to scan my network.

I have been having problems updating Gdata antivirus 2007 to Gdata TotalCare 2008 and keep getting ‘G DATA Internet security GUI has stopped working’ despite using Gdata’s removal and downloading the latest version I still cannot open the ‘Status’ screen. I have been trying with numerous removals and trying CCleaner for two weeks to have this resolved without success.
On a new Acer desktop the installation and the running was no problem and we are pleased with the results.
In the past I have had update problems with Gdata and these were eventually resolved.
I look forward to Gdata being able to resolve this problem.

GData will slow your computer down some. You want to disable internet filtering. Gdata will scan everything using http, I mean everything to include flash, gif, jpeg, java… all content you normally see while browsing webpages. This is what slows Gdata down while surfing the internet. Very thorough I must say, and a bit overkill for the average user. Reading that review link located above, even they say this antivirus is not for the average user. Better suited for enterprise networks and servers, where multiple scanning engines (Kaspersky & Avast) can effectively keep your network clean from the client side usage and downloads. I use ESET NOD32. I have had no problems with this superrior antivirus and the main thing it does not hog system resources. That same link above has an excellent write up about it also.

Their customer service sucks. I’ve been using GData Antivirus kit on 3 computers for a year. They failed to notify me of my annual renewal. When I attempted to renew online, it took me to a website in German, which I do not understand.
Then I purchased a new version. I downloaded the software and when I attempted to run it, I got “error reading setup initialization file.”
I have attempted to communicate with GData via email and telephone for two days now. Either I get someone speaking German, or an email reply in German, or I get put on interminable hold.
While it has been acceptable antivirus software, it DOES slow down my computers a lot. I would be willing to continue using them if they would help me resolve this issue. Alas, they are uncommunicative. They are FIRED, as of this afternoon.
