What should i do if my computer is infected (by spyware?)?

June 2nd, 2008 · 8 Comments

I have no idea what to do and this message keeps popping up telling me what i already know (that my computer is infected.) Any advice or instructions of what to fix this problem? Thanks plenty.
This is exactly what the popup says:

Your computer is infected!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss.

This message is from a rouge anti-spyware program (a bad guy pretending to be a good guy). It will nag you to buy their anti-spyware program, which is a piece of garbage. You have to treat this visitor as an infection.

You need a real anti-spyware program to remove it. Since there are several rouges out there that give the same kind of message "warning, your computer is infected", here are a few legitimate spyware cleaners: spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, spyware doctor starter edition, rouge remover, super antispyware and malwarebytes anti-spyware. They are all free and available from http://www.majorgeeks.com. On the left side, click on "anti-spyware" then get these programs (they are listed alphabetically.

Whatever you do, DON'T just use a search engine and just start downloading anything that looks good. That is the best way to totally infect and damage your computer to the point that your only remedy is to wipe and reinstall Windows. (If you MUST do stuff your own way, download McAfee Site advisor from http://www.siteadvisor.com so that you will KNOW what is a scam BEFORE you click on it.)
      Good luck.

Do you have Zinaps? That fits the description of Zinaps. This is very new, in fact, first appearance was 25th of May. Follow the instructions using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Scroll down to "Automated Removal Instructions for Zinaps using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:"

      Download avg free http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Install it and follow instructions - make sure it is up to date.
Try a full scan If it doesn't clean up in normal mode, start up in safe mode - press F8 repeatedly as it is starting up for safe mode.

Make sure that you install a good, commercial Anti-Virus/Spyware combatant like McAffee. I use this on all of my business computers.

This other option will sound smart-alek but it's not meant to.

If you find yourself constantly getting infected by spyware or viruses, consider a Mac. My friends switched after I convinced them to because of the sites that they visited.

My friend's computer was so screwed up by spyware, no tool, free or paid-for could clean it up. Frustrated, she dumped her Dell and bought a MacBook…

You have what might be a Trojan.Fake Alert. Does a window keep popping up telling you that you are infected and that you should download something to get rid of it? It's lying to you. You are infected, but only as far as the annoying pop up if you download what they say then you will really be infected. You need to buy a real good Anti Virus and Anti Spyware program.

      Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0

Or Spyware Doctor can get rid of this problem for you.
