Use AVG or Avast, both very good and free

There are a few choices when it comes to security, mainly in the AntiVirus department. Some very good, free anti-viruses available to download are:

1)AVG 8 AntiVirus. Easiest interface to use, very fast scanning and doesn’t lag your computer at all. Only has a 78% detection rate, but cathes the most harmful of viruses. If you’re a normal home user, you’re not in too much danger of higher level viruses and this is the AV for you:
      http://www.free.grisoft.com

2)Avast! 4 AntiVirus. Smaller, sleeker skin, average scanning speed, but reports alot of safe files as viruses, so you might need to watch out for that. 78% detection rate, but alot more complicated than most other free AVs. Use this if you are handy with a computer and you know what needs to be scanned:
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

3)Avira AntiVirus. Simple layout, which even the most basic of users can navigate. Incredibly fast scanning, with a 90% detection rate. Not as easy on the eyes as other AVs, and you need to know what you’re doing to get the more advanced features, but it is definite a candidate:
      http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

Personally I use AVG, but only because I go for looks. If you are paranoid about viruses then the only real option is Avira. But if you just want normal protection, then any of the three will do it for you.

      Hope that helps.

i guess avira is the best free antivirus available … having the best virus detection rate…

Free AVG short for Anti Virus Guard - why I would NOT use it:

      1. It does NOT guard
      2. poor detection rate (only 82%)
      3. AVG 8 (a hog of a program) will slow your PC down like Norton.
      4. AVG has a lot of problems at present like updating, etc.
      5. Well known for missing viruses.

      Free Avira:

      1. It does guard
      2. Very high detection rate over 94%
      3. A light program.
      4. It does have updating problems for time to time.
      5. It bad points are; you get a pop up each time it updates asking you to buy it & it does not scan e mails.

I'm no fool Avira is better.

      @Someone

Test AVG for your self & your see it does not guard:

      http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

Then run the same test on free Avira & free Avast, which do guard.

The detection rates are well known:

      free Avg 82%
      free Avast 86%
free Avira 94% (some say higher)

I agree no AV works 100% if it did we would all be using it.

      Hi

You can read this review of those 3 antiviruses:
      http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-anti-virus-software.htm

AntiVir, AVG and Avast all have real-time protection, however, AntiVir does not have anti-spyware and AVG does not have unknown anti-rootkit.

AntiVir does have the best heuristics (kind of like detection of unknown malware) and is the lightest but has advertisement when you update. AVG has a good interface but is bloated. Avast has the most features. All three will provide good protection.

I also recommend you use ThreatFire, and occasionally scan with Superantispyware free and Malwarebytes Antimalware free.

Ultimately you have to choose which one to use. Do you download a lot of files from less-than-reputable sites? Is your computer fast?

At Sly_Old_Mole: How does AVG not guard? Where did you get the 82% and 94% detection rate? "Well known for missing viruses" does not mean a lot, since no product has 100% detection rate.

I have been using AVG Free for years. I would say it is the best free anti-virus program on the market. http://free.avg.com/

Currently, A.V.G. is the Anti-Virus the most effective.

There are many programs available. I use avast.

      http://www.avast.com

I use it and never have had a virus.

Avira constantly tells you to buy the product… but also is very good just like avast. avast and avira both update virus defintion files more than 1nce a day.

Avg only will update once a day and takes a long time to scan.

So it is a choice really between avira or avast

depends on whether pop ups annoy you telling you to buy the product..

      from the site…..

Avast! is still free for personal use, and it's a relatively unobtrusive and capable virus stomper that will work well for just about anyone. A new feature adds a web proxy to the mix (which filters all traffic running through it for security risks), and it works will all major web browsers. It also recognizes non-virus threats like spyware and adware. The Pro edition ($40) adds a few power-user features that the average user probably won't miss. Give the free version a try!

Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7 - This has long been a capable and effective antivirus product, especially noteworthy for its fast operation.

UPDATE: Many readers have asked me about Grisoft's AVG product. I've used it and don't really prefer it to Avast/Avira, namely because it does not seem to scan all files effectively. Independent security ratings place it relatively low in overall capability as well. Your mileage may vary, of course.
