i want to get some files off an older pc i have its a lot of files so floppy disk and usb stick or not going to cut it unless i have to!
I have smartFTP installed on my laptop but have no idea how to connect it to another computer or if thats even possible!
i have Ethernet cables but not the transmission type or whatever you need to directly connect them just the regular ones i have a router that i could hook both computers to but i dont really know how to set up a network.
links to guides and advice which way would be simpler would be greatly appreciated!
my 98 machine does not have firewire i need to either do something over the internet or set up a network with Ethernet cables and my router

Firmwire will connect both of the pcs.

use a network hub and use Ethernet cables, run the network setup wizard on both of them. When finnished you will be able to locate files on both computers with no problem.

win98 does not support NT networks, so you will need to set up a workgroup, have both computers join the workgroup.
set the net protocols for netbui, not tco/ip. also allow file and print sharing.
turn the firewall off on the XP.

u culd just put the older computers hard drive into the newer one and configure the old one as the slave one and open up the older hard drive from my computer and drag the files to a new folder or to your desktop or watever
im pretty sure you gotta do some other things to get it to work…ive done it before i just dont remember what i did…i think it depends on if it recognizes your old hard drive as the primary one and then itll go to windows 98 or it could go to xp…if it goes to 98 you can do the same thing just drag whatever files you want into the hard drive folder on the newer one and voila

i really have no idea then i could prob figure it out…im just not there to do it
unless you can get a router set up a network and alow file sharing
idk if 98 will let you do that or not but yeah

To be honest, if you are not 100% with setting up a home network using your router, then just use a large USB key or removable hard drive that can connect to the USB port - provided you have Windows 98 Service Pack 2 which gives better USB suppot.
However, the best way is to set up a network. The guide that came with your router should help - and if you have lost it, simply Google the manufactuer and model number to find one

Okay. We start with the way things need to be plugged in.
WORLD (cable or dsl wall port) MODEM > ROUTER > Computers.
Sometime times the modem and router are the same unit. The rules are the same. Basically you connect an ethernet cable from each computer to the router, and the WAN or INTERNET port of the router gets connected to the Modem.
So now you have everything connected, and you are going to boot the 98 box, and you are going to set up TCP IP
Right click MY COmputer.. choose properties.
click on the device manager to display your hardware.
expand the network adapters list and make SURE that there is an ethernet card displayed, and it does not have any Xs or !s on it.
That being so…
START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL > NETWORK
The upper window has information about what protocols are installed on the machine. You need to see TCP/IP bound to the ethernet adapter (not the dial up adapter if it is listed, you want the ethernet)
If you see that everything is okay, and you have a TCP/IP protocol bound to ethernet, and it is very very likely set to DHCP.
If you don;t see that, you need to add TCP IP to the network card's protocol list… like so:
from the network control panel (the same place you are from the above instructions) click the add button.
Then click on the option "protocol" and click the add button.
You will get a window called Select Network Transport
On the left side select Microsoft. on the right side select TCP/IP, then click okay, which brings you back to the main network panel.
Click OKay again, to complete the installation. Once the installation is complete, reboot it, and move on to the XP machine.
Just make sure you can use the net. If you can, everything is okay, and you just need to find out the name of the workgroup you are in. Right click your
my computer icon, select properties, select the computer name tab, and find out what workgroup your are in.
By now the 98 machine is up and running, and it SHOULD be able to browse the net. if it can, what you need to do is change the computer's work group to the same one as the XP box, and just share your root drive (C:) recursively. Now, when you go to "my network places" on the XP box, you should be able to get at the root drive of the 98 box, and just go ahead and drag and drop or cut and paste.
