Encryption is only useful if you need to prevent someone from accessing your information.
The main problem with Whole Disk Encryption is that it slows your machine down as it encrypts and decrypts in real-time.
It is up to you.
The only program you will need is TruCrypt, this is the best open-source encryption solution on the market at the moment.
