*I heard these questions a lot and answered a lot of them before. Here is something that kind of goes along with your quesiton. Plus here is a link on were I got it.

That link's yahoo question was almost similar to yours. It says "Anti-virus program question, more I ask more confused I get?"
Remember that AVG is one of the best "Free" anti viruses there is. So if you take that in mind, most hackers would know how to pass AVG because a free product won't be as helpful as a paid one.
McAfee is likey NOT used by the government. Why would the U.S GOVERNMENT use a product that everyone can use already? They have their own line of defence. Dam, they even have real people just watching for viruses on their systems.
Remember that Window is a very buggy system. Window's defender is not something to relie on the whole time. Once a leak is out in their system, mostly all computers go hey-wire. Remember the "Blaster Worm"….?
You can pretty much go for anything. Best free one out there is AVG. McAfee is a great one which I would recommend becuase it doesn't get as annoying as Norton and other crap. You won't see lots of Pop ups and annoying things telling you that you must update your anit virus each time. Windows defender I am on the edge. It's free but you should get a real anti virus just in case. Like I said before, don't just rely on it the whole time.
I just do this. First I use AVG. The I just use trend-micro for back up. And I keep my Window's defender on.
http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ if you need the site.
If you have money you want to spend then sure, get McAfree, but just stay away from the annoying Norton. x____X Hope it helps, if not someone else helps you more. Or you can contact me with email. Bye. =P
*One small thing to note, if you use Mozilla Firefox, it's great at blocking viruses already.

* Here is totally free complete bundle… I have the same.. And highly recommend these programs…
* Clean and Protect your PC.
Security is a three tier affair, one firewall, one anti-virus and as much adware/spyware removal software as you feel needed?
* Avast antivirus - it has a boot time scanner. This important feature allows a user to instigate scanning before a virus is activated, in the case that a virus is suspected to be active on your computer already.
* SuperAntiSpyware - Finds viruses and spyware that are very very hard to find with no conflict to other antivirus software.
* Spyware Blaster - Will help keep your system spyware-free and secure, without interfering with the 'good side' of the web.
* Advanced Windows care Personal - Will boost your PC and has a Registry Fixer. It also has options to optimize IE -or- Firefox
* Comodo Firewall Pro - For XP and Vista keeps hackers out of your system and all types of malware.
* Do a search for all of these.
* Note: Practically all Spyware and Hijackers tend to target 'Internet Explorer' and not other browsers. If you don't mind switching your browser, then you should switch and immediately greatly reduce your risk of infecting your computer. I would recommend… Mozilla Firefox 3. New release with improvements in security, speed and design. It also will start blocking rather than simply warning about sites known to engage in "phishing" scams that try to trick users into revealing passwords and other sensitive information. The new version adds protection from sites known to distribute viruses and other malicious software.
* If you want to stick with IE… Make your Internet Explorer more secure with the WOT add-on - http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/details.aspx?view=info&itemid=6003789

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firef ox for free, Just have a try:
