Whats the difference between mcafee antivirus enterprise and regular antivirus?

March 25th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I was able to download McAfee antivirus enterprise 8.5i for free through my school. Its alot different as far as operation compared to any other antivirus product i have used. Can anyone tell me what the differences are and whether its a good product.
So what is going to happen when i move off the school network, will some of the features just not work?

It's a fine product. The difference is that the Enterprise version has features (that you cannot see) which allow the IT staff to push definition updates and program upgrades to your computer, and to get notified if any update fails on any computer in the organization that is running McAfee Enterprise. Some firewalls also have features that detect whether you have McAfee Enterprise installed on your computer, and whether it is up to date. If you don't have an up to date McAfee Enterprise, then the firewall does not allow you on the Internet (pointing you to an internal web page where you can download updates instead).

Having said all that, I assume that you're not paying for McAfee because your school is providing it to you. That's fine. But I don't believe in paying for anti-virus. Here's my normal speech about that:

All antivirus do just as well at detecting viruses. To get the actual comparisons of how every anti-virus program compares with the competition, go to the following link check out their comparative tests:
      http://www.av-comparatives.org/

So the best antivirus is a free one. Here are three free ones that you can choose from:

      AVG Free Edition: http://free.grisoft.com
      Avast 4 Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
      Avira Antivir Personal: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

Lastly, I also recommend installing Site Advisor. This free product will pop-up a red balloon if you go to any web sites that have malware. It will also put green, yellow, and red icons next to your Google and Yahoo search results. http://www.siteadvisor.com/
