What’s the point of running Avast On-Access Scanner if it blocks your internet access?

I recently downloaded Avast Anti-Virus programme but when the On-Access Scanner runs it just blocks my internet access.
I've terminated the On-Access Scanner now and my internet access has returned. Shall I uninstall Avast via the control panel or is there another way of running it and having internet access at the same time?? I have to terminate the On-Access Scanner manually everytime I turn on my PC because it starts running automatically everytime I log on.
