What’s the real difference between a MAC and a PC?

August 27th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I don’t want biased opinions from people who have never used or owned both, so please save it. I am a regular PC user, I have owned gateway, Acer and HP computers all of which I disliked. I am looking into buying a mac, preferably a macbook (all i can afford). But I am wondering what is so great about a mac that mac users tend to refuse to go back to a PC. I am a college student and want a computer to last me and be durable. Is buying a macbook worth it? If so why?
Also I know a mac is less likely to get a virus, and the OS is different but besides that what makes it so great?

That is a good question. Unfortunately, you’re going to find that it’s just a matter of preference. Macs have their own issues as does windows or linux. Hardware wise, they’re pretty much the same thing as your Acer and HP computers now. As you stated, what you’ll find is that they have a different operating system. This is a good thing and a bad thing. It’s bad because there are many applications that you cannot run on a Mac that you may be used to on Windows. Yes, you can run a lot of stuff through WINE on a mac, but not everything. If you’re really just looking for a change from windows, you could start out trying Linux instead of jumping to the point that you have to buy a brand new computer that you may end up regretting in the future. It is a bit more complicated, but Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com) has made things much easier for people getting started with linux. There are many users and a ton of support… all free. then if you decide you don’t really like the idea of everything being different, you’re not stuck with it. You could jump back on to windows and continue the suffering you’re already going through. After all, suffering is suffering. But if you’re used to a certain suffering, it’s preferable over a brand new suffering.

Its funny because i week ago i asked the same question to my friend and she told me the mac is faster and has more features and perfect for anyone who makes films and is a picture person.the windows is more for schoolwork… they are really dull. I just bought a mac yesterday,(i also bought a macbook because pro was too expensive)and i love it. it is such a good computer.they both have their differences but i would say the mac is more for creative people and pc is just like a buisness computer. i had a dell desktop all my life but apple beats pc.

      OSX vs. Windows.

The only difference is software. You can install either one on either comupter. So that hardware restriction is not a factor.
