When I turned on my computer two nights ago it was running real slow.?

There was also a bunch of files missing from "programs" in the Startup menu. The "search" feature in the Startup menu won't even open. Our java stuff is all gone. The computer won't recognize my mp3 player when it did before. All of our documents, music, and pictures are still on the computer and we can still get online just fine.

My question is, what the heck is this? Did my computer do some weird half crash or is this a virus? What can I do to fix it?

Additional Info: I'm on a PC running Windows XP
