Expect to get some different answers here as anti-viruses are people’s personal opinions. I’ll give you mine.
I’ve used AVG for year. Bottom line, it’s good but not great. It’ll often miss some viruses that others would eliminate.
I would go for Avast! Anti-virus. It’s boot-time scan is your best bet for getting rid of the most possible viruses using a free anti-virus.

Follow the instructions on the website to download and register. Registration is simply to receive free updates. When installing, be sure to say yes to the boot-time scan.
What will happen is when you restart your computer, before Windows loads, it’ll scan your computer for viruses. Stay in front of your computer throughout this process. If a virus is found the scan will stop until you tell the program what to do with it. Always try to repair the file first, if that doesn’t work, choose to delete it. If that doesn’t work, simply put it in the chest.
Once the scan is done, your computer will startup normally. You may also what to consider cleaning out your registry using a registry cleaner program if your computer is slow.

Go to the antivirus category and download AVG - it's the best free antivirus, in my opinion.
After you've done that, navigate to the antispyware category, and download Spybot - Search&Destroy and if you feel like downloading why not give SpywareBlaster a try (also in the antispyware category).
Congratulations! You now have antivirus+antispyware protection.
You said something about a slow computer… Visit the "system tweaking" category (on http://www.freesoftwareworkshop.com ) and download CCleaner - it will clean your PC. Also download NTRegOpt; it will optimize your registry.
