Avira is the best free antivirus product and mcafee is the best paid antivirus product.

Which products of each?
AntiVir Premium 2008 against McAfee Total Protection?
Or just the AV suites?
Either way, between the two, I would lean toward McAfee. Its a larger company. They have more people working to develop signatures for viruses as they come out.
If your looking for a "free" version of Avira, I wouldnt trust it or use it against McAfee.
A good free product that you can use to AUGMENT your McAfee would be ThreatFire. It doesnt use signatures, but looks at behavior based problems. This gives it a significant chance of catching Zero Day. Plus, it can be ran in conjunction with your current AV and is VERY lightweight in the amount of CPU power it uses and generally uses around 7KB or memory and peaks at 50KB when scanning..
If you want the best "paid" AV suite, trust ESET. They truly have the best AV (NOD32).
Finally, even more important than AV products is the fact you have to keep your Operating System and Software Up to Date! If the machine is patched for the vulnerability, it cannot be infected! Dont just trust automatic updates. Run it your self with Tools - Windows Update. Ensure products outside of MS are also updated (games, adobe, quicktime). Keeping these doors closed help ensure that you are NOT a "low hanging fruit" for attacks or worms.

McAfee & Norton are far too resource hungry and put their claws into everything, slowing the computer down. AVG has now bundled an anti-spyware with it, which is not a good idea. I use AVAST the free version. It automatically up-dates daily and I’m very satisfied. For an anti-spyware program I can recommend Spy Doctor. It isn’t free, but well worth it. I have used computers for the last 8 yrs. and have never had a virus. McAfee do have one good thing and that is their ‘McAfee Site Advisor’. It lets you know which are safe sites to visit, or download from when you Google. You can find the Avast & Site Advisor programs from Google.

Hi
I recommend you stick with McAfee. It’s got anti-virus and anti-pyware real-time protection (AntiVir free doesn’t have anti-spyware real-time) and ScriptScan. You can use AntiVir free as an on-demand and scanner. This should not have conflicts and is beneficial since AntiVir has superior heuristics.
By the way McAfee has a HIPS (I think you have to change the settings for it to activate) so you don’t really need ThreatFire. But it might be better just to turn the McAfee HIPS off and use ThreatFire since ThreatFire is excellent.
