I currently have Norton, but I've heard it slows the computer down….Also, I already have Windows Defender running…do I actually need another program if I have this one, or should I disable it and just run Norton…or vice versa?

Neither - I cannot recommend either one. Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best anti-virus programs available. I use NOD32 because it's lighter on my system than Kaspersky. Either of these programs are highly recommended. Recent tests prove Kaspersky and NOD32 are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee.
Norton is rubbish, it's notoriously bloated and likes to take over your system. Trend Micro Antivirus is a viable alternative if you're having a lot of trouble with software conflicts. Trend Micro rounds out the top three. BitDefender is very good as well, but gives a high number of false alarms.
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). If you want a free anti-virus Avira has higher detection rates than AVG or Avast! (94.26%).

Between the 2 you stated, I like McAfee better. But the free anti-virus programs mention by Sam are awesome too.

Norton, you can check it out by clicking on the ‘Comparatives’ link at:

However, it isn’t the best. This is (in effect) an advert, but it’s based on verifiable facts:

I have had both in the past… I currently have McAfee because as far as I'm concerned, it does the job better! Alright, so McAfee slows the computer down a bit more than Norton (there's more files on there, I think). But McAfee immediately warns you if there is a threat of a virus, or a virus has come onto your computer, and it will delete it for you.

Go for Norton all the others are letting bye the latest virus and Trojans, it may slow your PC or laptop down but nothing gets bye. Better safe than sorry. Just look on here to see all the problems. If you have Norton on line you dont need Defender.
