My preference is Avast (www.avast.com)
Reliable, easy to set up and maintain
Self updating
When i switched from AVG it found 5 infections AVG had missed . . . haven't looked back since

AVG. I have never had a virus problem while using it and it doesn't do stupid things that mess with your computer that others do.

I am in the tech industry and all of my peers and myself recommend AVG Free Edition. You can get it from Download.com so not to task their server.

Please do not download anything from
brothersoft.com which is in the link supplied by SAMMI as it is dangerous.
From Siteadvisor. When we tested this site we found links to golddownload.com, which we found to be a distributor of downloads some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs.
And AVIRA has the highest detection rate of the
three you mentioned.

AVG is the best =] I origionally had Norton, which is horrible and expensive. My internet had so so many viruses. I downloaded AVG and it found 26 trojan horses. That just shows how much better it is than norton and other anti virus protection programs.

no doubt AVG is the best among the free one. It's detection and protection rate is better. The most important thing is that it's definition (virus database) is updated on daily bases.
Avast will slow down your system as it's high on resources.
Detection rate of Avira is not as good as of AVG.

AVAST
it is free easy to install update and register
Real Time Scanner which does 07 types of scanning
removes virus trojans and ….
16 Sly_Old_Mole // May 30, 2008
Detection rates:
Avira over 94%
Avast 86%
AVG 82%
Avira has the best detection rate but does not scan e-mails
Avast does scan e-mails
AVG is a poor AV low detection rate, the new AVG 8 eats memory like Norton, with its poor detection rate AVG is known for missing viruses & then when it does find a virus cannot remove it, Kids like AVG because its easy to use & never bothers them (thats because of its poor detection rate)
Which is best free antivirus ?
Avira or Avast.

Avast because it scans everything, it's ultra paranoid and good for it, i changed recently from AVG due to the new version being a resource hog and wont be changing, infact every computer i have to work on has Avast installed now.
