Which is better? McAfee or Norton?

May 6th, 2009 · 8 Comments

Between the two which is better? And why? In addition to giving your thoughts on those two, is there an additional brand that anyone would recommend? Thank you!
OK…I'll try that avast!….but one more question: while my computer is in this state of 'sickness'

is that a bad time to change the security? I don't want to add to the drama…

Avast is better than either of those AND it is FREE!

avast is a good one, but also look into AVG (also free, and also very good).

The problem w/ both McAfee and Norton is that they hog resources on your computer like no other, and have somewhat needlessly bulky and flashy interfaces.

The free ones like avast and AVG just do their job, and do it well.

McAfee is one of the most complained-about anti-virus programs on Y/A. Norton doesn't really have good detection rates. I'd go with Avast free like the first answerer said. Also, NO anti-virus is 100%. What's more important is not clicking on anything stupid.

EDIT: For all of you AVG free users. Are you aware that it has no rootkit protection?

avast! Antivirus Home edition is the best I've experienced. Not only is it free, but has an excellent constantly updated virus database and isn't a memory and resource hog in Windows.

      Norton

Neither. Seriously, they're both terrible. McAfee I'd say is the lesser of two evils, but neither one does what it's supposed to do very well. Just download AVG or Avast - both have free editions that work better than McAfee and Norton and don't hog all your system resources in the process.

Those two programs are very bloated and are resource hogs that will slow your computer down. In my opinion your should try out:

      Avast - http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
      Avira - http://filehippo.com/download_antivir/
      AVG - http://filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/

All are free for personal use and if you like them, you can upgrade to a paid service which will give you extra features.

***But ONLY ever use ONE AntiVirus software at a time! Otherwise you have potential conflicts between each program and it can become bothersome.
