real time protection or detection rate?
if one is good at one but fair on the other where would you lean??
i have heard that avira has a better detection rate but avast has a better real time,
where should i go and why??

Detection-rate; there isn't much difference in quality of Real-time protection. Of course, real-time protection quality in itself is affected by detection rate to begin with.

I tried both and Avast seemed better as a ‘running ‘ scanner - But you should have a cleaner like Malwarebytes or Spybot as well to clean ‘heavier’ infections that can slip through - Anti virus may tell you that you are hit but use a heavy scanner at least once a week to fully clean

alright please keep in mind that no anti virus is perfect. I would go with avira if it has a better detection rate. This normally means it does a better job keeping the virus definitions up to date.
