Which is the best free antivirus between: McAfee, AntiVir, Avast, AVG or Norton?

April 11th, 2008 · 31 Comments

I currently use Avast, but I've heard that AV is the best free antivirus and internet security software.

And what is the best free software to scan, detect and remove adware, malware, spyware, etc?

I would recommend norton antivirus…coz it can remove a lot of viruses and worms…BUT it can slow down your computer be sure to have at least 1.5GB-2GB of RAM….If you cannot affort it just download AVG antivirus..

      Best of Luck!

My PC Guru set me up with Mcafee, wich I LOVE!! I also use spybot search and destroy, and also adaware. Between the three of them they really saved my butt a week ago. They are free and very user friendly.

avast is better than avg in my opinion.avg is good but avast is better when it comes to free ware.they both offer paid upgrades as well.i used to have avg and switched to avast.never looked back.if you are talking about malware thats a differant story.avast'avg'ect are anti-virus.anti-spyware is a differant animal.norton isnt free and its a rescource pig and sucks.many people recomend ad-aware 2007 free.i dont.this program isnt near as good as it used to be.best anti-spy?paid would be spyware doctor.free? i like spyware terminator.there are others that are free.a web search will give you a ton of choices

McAfee if you want to spend money
      AVG if you don't
What ever you do don't get Norton read at this website what Norton did to my PC:
      http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvX3lCNQcPdAAeiHhES5PKwhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080408142202AAs023K&show=7#profile-info-XHocY1j7aa

This is what I wrote about Norton:
"Norton just sit on your taskbar making you think it's doing something by flashing and annoying you with pop-ups saying "do you want to do this?" and "do you want to do that?". Norton have been scammed by the programmers since there have been traces of Norton accessing and copying peoples files, if anything i say norton is a virus itself since when i got rid of it on my pc's they all got faster and they never crash my modem is not being used and hogged up by files being sent across the web and I found myself that norton had placed files on my hard drive which had ended up re-installing itself and giving me more pop-ups saying "new virus found called Norton 360.exe" and "new virus found called McAfee Security center" the stupid thing actually found a virus; itself. And a few years ago Norton let my pc crash instead of stopping a virus made from itself!!! I e-mailed them and guess what 3 years no reply!"

      AVG

McAfee and Norton really really suck (up resources)
      Avast misses alot
      AntiVir is useful sometimes

To your last question: the is NOT ONE good product that covers all of that.

you need to do some research on both these concepts:

      HIPS: host-based intrusion-prevention system
      IDS: Intrusion Detection System

Please, please don't run windows in an administrator's context!!

If you want free, its avast or AVG. If you can spend some money, try Sophos. Its best so far. It doesnt slow down your PC too. all threats will be detected very fast.

Sophos Anti Rootkit is free. you must run this. Threat Fire is now as a addon on antivirus products. ITs gooud to have this also. This is free download.

I’m using Eset NOD32 Antivirus and Agnitum Outpost Firewall v4 (as it uses memory ressources than v2008) together. I would say that I have maximum protection without slowing down my computer.
      However they aren’t free.
      I am totally satisfied.

    • 17 drjeff // Jul 5, 2008

You shouldn’t call Norton Antivirus scammers or hackers. That’s just silly, probably you got a nasty trojan that took over your norton. I’ve seen it happen, the newer norton I’d like to think is stronger then that, but who knows? I don’t recommend Norton, but they’re certainly not dangerous. I use symantec website all the time to research certain viruses and use their helpful removal tools as needed.

    • 18 Antivir is best // Jul 17, 2008

I use Antivir premium. In a recent test of all antivirus software, Antivir was ranked 7th best in the world with 97.13 % score.

      http://virus.gr/portal/en/content/2008-06%2C-1-21-june

AVG was ranked 11 with 94.87% score, Avast was ranked 13th with 93.78%, Mcafee was ranked 21 with 86.39% score and Norton was ranked 23 with 83.34%

well i had this avast av and i think it worked awesome but i just made the stupidity to uninstall it to try mcafee, and i say stupidity cause i recently researched and it seems for most of all that it sucks and its way too expensive, so i will have to wait an entire year to change back to avast or avg i dont know they are both good i think (never used avg actually, I just read it was ok) in few words im screwed

Previously, I was also using Mcafee Antivirus but I found some problem on it. It is not being updated by superdate file. So, curently I am using Avast Home edition. I guess it is working awesome after entering free license key from net.

    • 29 will // Oct 5, 2009

gotta say . i dont see whats so good about avira . i used to have it and it has to be like the most most most un user friendly piece of crap made . sure it has good virus definitions ,but…. how thaa hell do u delete them without having to go through a bit*h of a time trying to figure it out

    • 30 will // Oct 5, 2009

i was told by a professionall to get something called the norton ghost . its not a antivirus but a automatic backup tool . not exactly sure how it works but i do know it dont slow ur computer down at all nor does it have any stupid trojans it gives u like the old crappie beta style norton av. its strictly a backup tool u can have it set on auto backup . then if u have a prob u can just load ur bckup
