I currently have AVG free edition installed on my computer and would like to install an anti-spyware program …..
Would it be safe to have both AVG and Ad-Aware 2008 (or Spybot - Search & Destroy) installed on my computer ?
And which program is better .. Ad-Aware 2008 or Spybot - Search & Destroy ?

ad-aware , spybot , ccleaner are the best free tools to use . No one program is 100% so its a good idea to use 2 or 3 because what one might miss another will catch . You can find these 3 free programs along with some great info at http://www.world-of-windows-software.com
And they are safe to have with your anti virus program .
I use all 3 and they work great !
