Dear all,
I’m using a fairly old laptop and decided to install another OS to experience different environment and free myself from over-dependency Windows. Is Linux an OS or is it just a platform on which other OS are built upon? Can anyone recommend user-friendly OS (are all free softwares GUI-based?)
Heard of Fedora and Ubuntu but then there are KDE, GNOME, UNIX which made me all the more confused.
Does one have to have programming knowledge to use some command-based OS? My computer knowledge is all over the place.
I know it may be too long a question so let me know if there’s a forum I could go to.
Thanks guys!
Contemplating: Open solaris or Ubuntu..
Just hope to get something with GUI (or a bit of command line). And friendly too!
Thanks people for the feedbacks. More please…
Besides Office applications, are most softwares (games, programming tools) in the market compatible with these OS? I've always read in the system requirements: Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS

You can switch to linux, it is a free, open source O.S. A particular version you can switch to is Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Read the Wikipedia link below:
Then, try the free Freespire Linux (based on Ubuntu Linux), it's designed for first time "Windows switchers" like yourself:
It looks like Vista on steroids!
But, "I'm using a fairly old laptop" may limit you to Xubuntu, built for older PCs, from:
