I’m getting a file called _wmplayer.dll popping up in my System32 directory. Both of my anti-spyware
programs are singling it out as a possible infection, but they aren’t doing anything about it. Does anybody know
anything about this file and what it might be doing?
From the name, it sounds like it might be related to my
Windows Media Player, so I’m a little scared to delete it. This is frustrating because I can’t seem to find
anything about it online that makes any sense to me.

I did a quick search and it seems to me that it is in fact related to a virus going around. The fact that it’s called _wmplayer.dll makes it a sneaky bugger, fooling you into thinking it’s a system file related to your movie player. I’d say delete it if you can, if that messes up your movie player, just uninstall and reinstall it, or even create a restore point before you go messing around with anything.
I’d say check out Malwarebytes Anti Malware before you go doing anything more drastic. It’s a pretty powerful tool and its basic features are absolutely free, maybe this will work out for you. You could also try HijackThis, and post to their forums. Their gurus are very helpful. Wish I could help more but since I’m not in the same room I can only give you a generalized answer and hopefully point you in the right direction. Best of luck

I’d HIGHLY suggest you run a registry scan on your
computer to see what this file is all about. Spyware and adware programs will sometimes disguise their
components to look like Windows system files.
I had _wmplayer.dll attach itself to my Internet Explorer as a BHO
(browser helper object). It was actually a Trojan downloader. The firewall and many anti-virus programs won’t
catch it, because it registers as a part of Explorer. I found it with a free registry scan that identified the
file as a problem. I used http://regzooka.com and it caught several spyware files I didn’t know I had.
_wmplayer also can record data input (yes, I know way to much about this stuff), so you’ll want to get that
scanned and fixed ASAP.
