Why can’t I change my monitor resolution?

August 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

When I reboot my computer accidentally by pulling out the power plug, my resolution was set by the very very low 800 X 600. Naturally, I right-clicked on my desktop and went down to properties. Usually, the window has a tab labled “Settings” in which you can control the “SHARPNESS” of the resolution. I went to the setting tabs under “screen resolution”. There were 2 options: the very very very LOW 800 X 600 and the higher, the normal 1024 X 768. I tried set it up to higher one 1024 X 768, but it didn’t work at all. Everything looks so big and unclear. Panicked, I tried to set it higher again and It was still on 800 and 600. It seems that the computer itself was automatically set on low quality. I tried this for a couple of times. Like I said, I didnt work at all. everything seems like big and crap. I can’t seem to get it the way before. Any help are welcomed and of course, there will be reward(yahoo points) 4 the best answer.
Additional Information(if needed)
System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2(I am on the safe mode).
Computer: Intel(R) Celeron Cpu 1.70 GHz 1.70 GHz, 368MB RAM
Things I like to add(if needed)
Like I said, I am on the safe mode now because when I am on the normal Window XP mode, the Internet stops working and say “i have to shut down the Internet Explorer because an error occured” Is this something to do with my resolution? plz help any help are welcomed

In safe mode, your graphics driver is gone, so you can’t increase your resolution as much.
I’d recommend getting out of safe mode and trying some cleanup stuff on your computer.
It doesn’t sound like a virus at all, just get out of safe mode.

Well what I would do in this situation is right click on the desk top. Go to properties, then settings. Click on trouble shoot. From what I read you may have reset some kind of default resolution of some sort on your computer. Follow the instructions on the trouble shooting guide to make sure 1. The right monitor is selected and 2. See if you can change the resolution with the trouble shooting guide. Because maybe for some unknown reason you can’t change it just by clicking on the desktop. But Most importantly, make sure when to adjust the resolution, push apply the click OK. Hope this helps.
