why cant .MOD files run in windows media player for windows vista home premium?

it would run the file without sound or sometimes without video
i tried to change file extensions(with view file extensions) to .mpg same issue

i tried file conversion softwares, no go

.MOD files run on XP why is it like that? any suggestions?
