It's usually pretty fast but all of a sudden it completely slowed down. I did a scan with Windows Defender and it came up clean. I also usually use symantec antivirus, but it's coming up so slow that I can't even use it to scan.

to speed up my computer i like adding/removing programs, running an adaware scan, editing the startup menu programs to shorten the list of crap the computer has to load, doing a disk cleanup under accessories on start menu, and running spy doctor scans

You probably already have used all youre memory in youre hard drive.
theres no room for virtual memory.
Try using disk clean up and defragment. That should give a little bit more memory. plus if have less icons on the desktop the better, and go classic windows theme, and when you shut down dont. Hibernate. So when you boot up again you will go directly to the memory that you last were using instead of booting up new settings everytime you turn on the pc.

first verify that system is showing same amount of ram that you have installed
second start task manager and see which application is using much resources (memory and cpu column)
third type "msconfig" in run box and remove check on every thing in it except the thing that you know are essential

Try doing a "clean-up" to get rid of temporary files, these can slow things down quite a bit.
