Why do I get so many trojan horse viruses daily??

July 26th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Every day my computer insists on doing a virus scan. Every day I let it. Every day it finds anywhere from 4-6 trojan horse viruses on my computer. So, of course, every day I quarantine, clean, and permanently delete these viruses.

I don't download anything off of the internet, the only attachments I ever get in e-mails are pictures from friends and that's super rare, certainly not every day… not even every month.

Anywho… I have a firewall and it's working. I have Norton virus whatever it's called. I have another anti-virus program my college forces us to put on our computers before hooking up to their network. Nobody else uses my computer without me being RIGHT THERE. and even then… it's not every day.

How are these getting on my computer?

How do I stop getting them?
Thanks jibbarjabar! My computer has been running super slow since I installed the one from school. I'll uninstall Norton and give you an update.

You are using 2 anti-viruses at the same time and thats a huge mistake. One anti-virus is likely detecting what the other anti-virus has in quarantine.

Use must use only one anti-virus. Uninstall the other.

This is what a Microsoft MVP has to say about the subject. You may also want to consider reading her entire web-page on "How to prevent Malware". It is one of the best that I have seen.
      http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

"Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously! The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown."

      Good luck.

Ok what might be happening is the trojan is duplicating itself. Your virus definitions are probably not up to date. Click update in Norton. After updating, scan your computer. If it still doesn't help, download this: http://www.free.avg.com . Its another antivirus program called AVG. Its free. Scan with it and tell me how everything went.

      Hope this helps!

I'm not sure - but one thing for sure is you shouldn't have more than one resident anti-virus program running

by "resident" I mean that the active real-time protection of it is enabled - its fine to have one inactive and only use it for an on-demand scanner

if you have two running they can actually interfere with each other in cleaning - (the behavior of the one doing the cleaning can trigger the other one to consider the activity as malicious )

find out how to disable the resident protection of one or the other - Norton, despite its problems as a program, does offer pretty good and up-to-date protection

I also suggest you get CCleaner - once installed just run it with the default settings before you do a virus scan
      http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

another thing you could do is disable your system restore function before you clean - that clears out all the old restore points - a virus may resurface through the old restore files (although I don't think basic trojans do that) - instructions on that here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405

you might want to try scanning with a good spyware program too - many recommend SuperAntispyware
      http://www.superantispyware.com/

      or, of course Spybot
      http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html
a guide to set it up here:

      good luck

=D if all else fails, format and learn to be more careful about downloading and surfing. P2P programs and clicking ads tends to get you the most viruses.

Go to the Symantec Security Response page for trojan horses and try removing it by the instructions given there. (Under the removal tab) This is the link -

      http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-021914-2822-99&tabid=3

Or you could refer to this website on how to remove Trojan Horses -

      http://www.business.com/directory/computers_and_software/security/software/virus_protection/trojan_horse/

      Good luck!

First of all, Norton anti-virus is rubbish. Use AVG, Ad-aware 2008, and Spyware Blaster for FREE.
Don't use two anti-viruses! It causes conflit between them if you have both on your computer… Plus, it might slow your system down.

I think the virus might be duplicating itself. Or, there's always those websites that have viruses. I went to a FAMOUS record label's website, and on every page, there was a virus =/

      These are the best anti-viruses:
      AVG 8.0 or Avast
      Adware 2008
      Spybot Search and Destroy
      Spyware Blaster

With all of those, you'll have good protection. They're free, too.
Just don't use Norton, and you should be alright.

If they don't work, go on http://www.bitdefender.com and do an online scan. It takes ages to do this though, so leave your PC running overnight or something.
