I have AVG too.. My computer use to do the same. The problem is that your computer needs more memory (MB) and more GB. I upgraded at geek squad and now is all fast with AVG.

How much memory do you have? Upgrade to a higher memory.

When your computer acts up, have a look in your task manager what is using the most resources (either CPU or Memory)
More memory isn’t necessarily going to help you depending on your current machine specs.
Could be a range of things from a current malware/virus infection (even if you have AVG installed, they don’t always pickup everything) to hard drive corruption.
Best bet would be to try and narrow it down first.
