I just bought a new PC with Windows XP Pro.
My old PC also had XP Pro.
My son plays a lot of old DOS games.
They worked fine on the old PC.
On this new PC, when you try to start one of these games, it shuts the monitor down (into power save mode).
The only way to bring the monitor back is to restart the PC (without shutting down windows).
I am using the same minotor I had for teh old PC, still plugged in via DVI interface.
I am running a 1680 x 1050 resolution at 60 Hz.
I have tried ALL different compatibility option in the windows properties selection for each of these games to no avail.
I also have an XP Pro laptop and have confirmed that these games DO work on that laptop as well.
So why won't my games work?
Oh, also, I have an ATI 256 MB grphics/3D card. Old PC had comparable although I cannot guarantee the brands were the same, but these are old DOS games so I can't see how that would be relevant.

did the monitor operate at the same resolution on the older system? Sometimes, lcd monitors will not function properly when switching between resolutions…that is why they are rated with a "native resolution." Find out what is native for yours and use that. Next, set the games up to operate using a windows shortcut and not out of the command prompt. Then, in the properties menu for the shortcut, have the games run in "windowed" mode (or something similar) This way, the monitor won't have to switch resolutions.
