My PC has Norton Internet Security, which I thought was about the best anti-virus software around. Despite this, I’ve just caught malware called ‘Security Toolbar 7.1′, which Norton doesn’t recognise. Having downloaded Spyware Doctor, this shows I also have lots of other spyware that Norton obviously doesn’t recognise either - but to actually get rid of it requires a subscription to Spyware Doctor. What’s wrong with with Norton? Do I really have to pay for additional anti-virus software, having already bought Norton? If so, which is the best? And any suggestions about getting rid of Security Toolbar 7.1 specifically? Any ideas gratefully received!

Current malware produces misbehavior in browsers, especially from ‘Peer-2-Peer’ file sharing sites.
When PC’s (personal confusers) misbehave, like pop-up’s, going to unrequested sites, goofy warnings, etc.; one step to help reduce annoying pop-ups & un-requested websites from being displayed on your machine is to
TURN OFF 3rd PARTY COOKIES.
INTERNET EXPLORER: Tools> Internet Options> Privacy> Advanced: here check ‘Override automatic….’; ‘Allow session cookies’; ‘Allow 1st party cookies’; & ‘Block 3rd Party Cookies’.
FIREFOX: Tools> Options> Privacy: here UN-CHECK ‘Accept 3rd Party cookies’
(OPERA, et al: not sure, check under ‘options’ for this).
Then, you’ll have to ERADICATE MALWARE with Spybot, Ad Aware, and all available trusted cleaners & Anti-virus software, and suggested
TOOLS FOR SPECIFIC INFECTIONS listed from other posts in this forum.
Note: some current ‘rouge’ malware will undo this change, so you might have to redo this step after malware has been eliminated.

Well, basically Norton is an Anti-virus Program. Even though it catches some Spyware, but you can’t expect them to give you another Utility (named Spyware) in an Antivirus.
So, its better if you get some Anti Spyware as well.
And above all, you need not pay anything for that.
Plenty of them are available free on the Internet. The best one I know is Adaware Professional. Its free, though you can always upgrade to a Premium Version.
