Why is AVAST HOME EDITION not working the same anymore?

I just got my internet turned back on so my AVAST expired. Well, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Now It doesn’t show up on the bottom right of my desktop anymore and I can’t choose whether it protects me from unsecure IMs and emails and P2Ps. Did they cut that out of the free version?? I have to go into my programs and open AVAST now and it only scans my computer when I tell it to. It used to have more features. What happened?
