Why is my 16:10 widescreen monitor only capable of 4:3 standard screen resolutions?

I have a new 19″ widescreen monitor (native res. is 1440×900), and after installing Vista is’t only giving me the option of standard screen resolutions. My options are; 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×1024, and 1620×1200. I haven’t installed any of the latest drivers yet, would that be my fix? Thanks.
So that latest driver for my GPU will fix my problem?

You do not have the correct driver for your video card. Install the drivers if you want it to work right.
