I have a laptop that is about 2 and a half years old now. A few weeks ago it was running fine, a little slow but nothing too serious. Over the last few weeks it has gotten extremely slow to the point it took me about 15 minutes just to get to this page. After pressing ctrl alt delete i noticed the cpu usage is at 100 and there is a huge list of processes running. I didnt end the processes because i really dont know anything about computers and I didnt want to delete anything that may be important. Any suggestions of what could be wrong or how i could fix it?

You probably have a bunch of viruses on the laptop.
You could get a registry sweep software or virus software
Or just get a macintosh.

One thing (of several) is to ‘compress contents’ and ‘allow index service’. These help optimize file recovery speed & save disk space.
Start> my computer> right click ‘c’ drive> properties> general tab: here check both boxes & ‘OK’.
Don’t freak out, it may say 3 days or more to run, but this time drops dramatically as the process advances; just walk away and let ‘er run for the duration: it will self close when done.
Depending on the files & sizes, it may take several hours to do (maybe do it at night before bed?).
When done, run ‘CCleaner’ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)
& defrag the drive.

Is your hard drive nearly full?
If your hard drive is very close to full this can cause problems. Windows does not keep all your programs and data in the computers memory when running - it uses a file on the hard drive called a "paging file" - a temporary file where windows places data in addition to the computers memory.
If the hard disk is nearly full there is not enough room for the paging file to work properly and this can make your computer run as slow as a car runs on water.
Maybe time to clean up those old files?
If there is plenty of space on your hard drive it is probably infected.
Try using antivirus and antispyware software to clean it up:
Use Antivir antivirus (free)
Spybot Search and destroy (free)
Lavasoft adaware (free)
Trend Housecall Online scan (free)
In either situation, i.e. if you have deleted files to make space on the hard drive or if you have run all of those cleaner programs then defragment your hard drive to improve performance and reduce wear on the drive.
Best wishes,
Matthew

There are several things and programs you can run to help improve the loading time of your laptop. Considering how many processes are running, I am guessing that you have a ton of programs running when you start windows. You might want to try installing unnecessary programs, or fragment your hard drive. All these things can be searched on Google for more information. If you choose, you can reset your computer to factory settings by formating your hard drive. This will delete any saved files and programs, but will make your computer run like new.
